Portal Test Gone Wrong

Holy hell! I’ve been working on this painting for quite some time now! For some reason I seem to be stuck on depicting scenes from 1993’s DOOM for the PC. Something about that era of retro-futurism, coupled with the flashy neon glow and almost garish color pallet of the early 1990s is very appealing to me.

One of the most interesting aspects of that game was the teleportation tests that the UAC was performing in their Mars bases. You see, the UAC wanted to conquer space travel by zapping crates and soldiers around Mars with a snap of the fingers.
But like any good sci-fi hubris, things went sideways fast. Those teleporters weren’t just skipping across the Martian surface; they were ripping open reality itself. Instead of neat little wormholes between Phobos and Deimos, the gates started coughing up horrors straight out of HR Geiger’s imagination.
Scientists lost their minds, the bases turned into bloodbaths, and suddenly the receiving platform wasn’t a sterile lab anymore, but a god-forsaken welcome mat for demons.

To start, I sketched out my idea. I used Krita as they have a pretty awesome tool for nailing down the perspective.

Then I inked in the important bits, and it was off to the races with the painting in!

Overall this project was a good learning experience. I was working on it for so long that as my skill improved, I would think of more elements and effects to include in the final piece.

Super excited to get working on the next painting! What video game should I paint next?
