About This Project

Ever wonder what the United States would look like if every statehood proposal ever thrown into the ring actually stuck? Yeah, me too. What started as a casual scroll through Wikipedia on a lazy afternoon—specifically, the page for Absaroka—quickly spiraled into an all-consuming research project. I found myself knee-deep in historical records, news archives from the 1800s, and academic articles, all to uncover the wild, weird, and fascinating proposals that never made it onto the official map. This project is basically James K. Polk’s ultimate fever dream—if he’d had his way, we’d be adding a new state every other Tuesday!

This project isn’t just a collection of “what-ifs”; it’s a dive into the quirks that make the U.S. so diverse. Mapping out these alternate states has deepened my understanding of the country and its often arbitrary borders. Growing up in Vermont, with its unique history as an independent republic, sparked my curiosity about the stories behind these lines, driving me to uncover proposals that could have turned Polk’s expansionist vision into the largest, craziest map the U.S. has ever seen.

The process has been a wild ride—chasing down obscure books on archive.org, wading through JSTOR articles, and even getting lost in newspaper archives from centuries past. It’s been an education in both research and the art of map-making, a process as meticulous and creative as painting on a canvas. And while I’m far from finished, the journey so far has been as satisfying as striking gold in a riverbed.

This project isn’t just for history buffs or map geeks—it’s for anyone who’s ever been curious about the stories behind the places we call home. Whether you’re a lifelong American or just interested in how the U.S. might have looked in an alternate universe, there’s something here for you. And who knows? Maybe once this is all wrapped up, I’ll take a crack at South America or even turn this whole endeavor into a book. After all, there’s no shortage of fascinating stories out there waiting to be told.

State of Onondaga	In July 1924, a crucial meeting took place at the Onondaga reservation in Syracuse, New York. The Iroquois Confederacy of Six Nations was faced with a significant decision: whether to pursue legal action against the U.S. government to reclaim large areas of land in New York State that had been ceded through treaties generations earlier. Temporary Head Chief Andrew Gibson called a council of Onondaga chiefs and sachems to discuss the potential lawsuit, which was spearheaded by Mrs. Laura C. Kellogg of the Oneidas of Wisconsin. However, the Onondaga tribesmen expressed deep reservations about joining the legal battle due to the substantial financial burden it would impose without a guaranteed outcome.
