Cut and Prototype Beer Can Designs

Now the design process can be tough, and leave no quarter for a design that doesn’t fit the bill! The can designs I did for the Five Point Five Brewing Company was certainly no exception!
However, instead of letting these failed designs fall into the dust bin of history, I figured I’d share them – maybe they can inspire you!

Unnamed ’70s Themed Beer

Clearly, this one didn’t get too far into the design – as the name wasn’t even finalized by the time the design was cancelled.
I was trying to evoke the clean and graphic style of 1970s soda and beer cans with this design.
I also did a sketch of a surfer with a wooden board. What’s more ’70s than that?

Bungalo 304

These were the original designs I came up with for Bungalow 304.
For some reason I really enjoy simple and graphically bold designs juxtaposed with some detailed drawing. Really gets me going. I’d grab this beer off the shelf. But alas, the customer is always right!

Hazy Daisy

This was the one that I came up with the most ideas for, but ironically, is the one that I did not end up doing the final design for. Too bad too, I really liked these designs. Especially the 2nd version.

Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat

This was another one that ended up on the cutting room floor. I went through two major ideas with this one – first being a literal homicidal psycho jungle cat, a la Tiger Force in Viet Nam.

Eventually I moved on to directly referencing Calvin & Hobbes, as the name is a direct reference to the famous C&H collection by the same name.

John Wit

Unfortunately another design that ended up on the cutting room floor. This one may actually be picked up down the line though, fingers crossed.
The main thrust of the design here is twofold: John Wick reference, and a reference to wheat – the primary ingredient of a Witbier.

I love how clever the last version is! Thanks to my roommate Kaeden for coming up with the concept.

Pacific Standard

This one had a truly insane amount of variations.

The first design was based off a airline boarding pass, kinda referencing an imaginary Pacific Standard airline.

Second design ran with a similar idea, but was based more of mid-century magazine advertisements for PamAm Airlines.

Then we finally arrive on the final idea, but boy did determining the fonts, colors, and textures take a loooong time. I’ve grabbed a selection of variations, but there were over 50 in total! Whew! But at least we got to see all the options!

So there you have it, the designs that never made it out, compiled for your enjoyment. Which designs are you bummed didn’t make it onto a can?
